INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2019 INTERVIEW: DAMI ONAMUSI, DASH EVENTS

Hey Dami! Tell us who you are and how you would you best describe your role?

My name is Dami Onamusi, I'm 26 years old. I am an Events Manager/Consultant and I also run my own Events company called DASH Events. Day to day, I work at Haymarket Media Group where my responsibilities vary between Stakeholder Management, client updates and planning multiple events. Sometimes it can get so stressful but I do love that my job keeps me busy.

DASH is my passion project and side hustle, haha! Day to day, it's a matter of liaising with clients I already have - I like to find out what you want/need from me and updates on what else I can do for you and your project - this usually happens on WhatsApp. We are now a team of seven since about two weeks ago so I'm just in the middle of splitting roles and responsibilities at the minute!

Congratulations! How long have you been doing events for?

I've been doing it for 5 years now!

Wow, so you must enjoy it?

Oh, I'm really passionate about events because you see events as experiences and your job is to bring an experience to life.

The Black Awards, October 2018

What made you decide on pursuing Events Management?

I didn't really know what I wanted to do after Uni. I considered Finance, HR, even Politics because that was what I studied. But during my time at University, I was ACS Promotions Officer in my first year and then ACS President during my second year. It when then when my friend encouraged me to get into events and here I am!

Do you find as a woman there are more expectations or pressures to deliver?

I feel like I do have to prove myself more being young and doing events in such a corporate world. People sometimes look at me and think, 'What do you really know?' but until I start talking and showing I do actually know my stuff too, their opinions change. My role is a Senior role so it is quite disappointing, I definitely feel that my race, age and gender all has a part to play.

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date?

I'd say my greatest achievement over at my 9-5 job would be working on the ACT Annual Conference definitely. It is a conference of approximately 1500 delegates, an exhibition of 300 exhibitors and 150 speakers. In terms of DASH, definitely The Black Awards! Being able to lead the first one was fantastic, it was a great night!

Do you have any tips or advice for anyone who wants to follow the same career path as yourself?

Know your strengths, you'll need to know whether you're operational, strategic or more into sales side of it. Also, get loads of experience if you can! Volunteer at events and just be prepared to get stuck in. It is a job which has very long hours, it can be stressful but is extremely rewarding!
